  2. The words barelwi and barelwiyyah were used by other sects for the Sunni Muslims, we are the Ahl al Sunnah wal Jama'ah Sunni Muslims al Hamdulillah. The others are trying to make it in to a new sect, by using that name to make it appear limited.

The Ahl al Sunnah are much greater than this.

that is wrong. An allamah is so much more. An allamah must no AT LEAST 10,000 hadith, he must be an expert in all fields of Islamic knowledge and must be a person who other scholars look up to.

an example is Muhadith e Kabeer Allamah Zia Ul Mustafa who is also known as "Allamah Saheb". He is worthy of this title.

nowadays, all maulanas are allamahs and this is wrong

  8. tazkiyyah bhai,

I agree that nowadays titles are given too freely. i know of people who've just been to egypt or syria for a year or two to learn arabic and when they come back they are listed as 'shaykh so-and-so'. and women reverts are called shaykha! it is becoming a joke. I think people are using it as a means of respect instead of 'sir' or 'lady'!

the word 'allamah' when used in urdu/panjabi in common parlance means that the person has been to a madrassah and completed the dars-e-nizami course i.e. he is a maulvi. And there are such people in the UK. The 'crisis' arises when anyone who can read arabic or has memorised a few surahs is called 'allamah' too.

the other point is that most of these are from the older generation and are immigrants to the UK.

amongst British born Muslims/reverts the number of people who have completed a dars-e-nizami syllabus (or its equivalent) are very few indeed.hence the crisis we're in.

even then i don't think we should call them 'shaykh'.
i personally think only a real alim who is also a Sufi pir/shaykh should be called Shaykh.

otherwise it makes the term meaningless.

I was looking at a page of pakistani events on the net in the UK.
Every event had Allamah Mufti .....
I thought...if there are so many Allamahs in england..then there is no crisis!

Its a good thing to love and respect ulema.
and the people who do that are sincere insha'allah.

But what happens if you name someone Allamah..is that its a big title.
There might only be one Allamah in the world...so when you start calling every scholar allamah..as we do in pakistan, it detracts from the title.

So we need to learn to use titles like mufti and Allamah really carefully.
I don't know any real muftis in england.
Theres a lot of young ppl who have studied basic islam 10-15 years and are called mufti, but i wouldn't call that mufti personally.

    It requires deep deep knowledge.
Like you could call the Syrian aalim shaykh adeeb al kallas a great faqeeh

what i've read about my master imam ahmad rida khan barelwi is that he always referrred to himself as talib e 'ilm.

and the same for those who followed imam ahmad rida's way like mawlana sardar ahmad qadri muhaddith e a'zam pakistan. when introduced for a speech someone attributed many great titles for him but mawlana said don't say such things.

dont quote me on this but i think i remember sidi aH writing that imam suyuti called himself the mujaddid to thank Allah for this blessing. and in 1900 the ulema e ahle sunnat were united in calling imam ahmad rida mujaddid e mi'at e haadira.

so you're right...its down whether ulema want to hear their praises. like rasulullah sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam often praised himself but then said wa la fakhri.

so i think ulema should be given titles but only those titles that are given to them by other real ulema like madni miyan was called shaykh ul islam by allama ahmad saeed kazmi himself.

i dont know if mawlana hamid rida said this during his fathers life but at his demise, he uttered a tarikhi name of shaykh ul islam wa'l muslimeen which comes to 1340 using abjad.

    Thats a good point.

Its only if the shuyukh like hearing those things that its an issue.
I guess we should have husn adh dhann that shuyukh hate being called
mufakkir al islaam and shaykh al islaam...but their students call it to them
    behind their backs.
After these people die then its not an issue..because now they can't stop people calling them that. But i'm sure in their lifetimes they dislike it.
    Insha'allah

it is not the scholars but their awaam and co-scholars who give them the titles out of love and respect, I have heard it from numerous mureeds of Shaykh Nuh how he is the reviver of the current times.

    What does Shaykh Nuah have to do with such a claim or title? even if I believe it to be correct;

I guess language also plays a part in the whole thing; it is only when the scholars love to hear those titles that it becomes an issue.

He's actually just landed in england for about 2 or 3 days.
Its not publicised...he's not the sort of person that has adverts everywhere
saying ghawth al islaam..or qutb al waqt
    or jeelani az zamaan
or mufakkir al kawnayn etc etc.

    He just comes..teaches and departs

  15. Yes, bro, dhawq is a matter of individual preference. I've sadly never yet met
    Shaykh Nuh in person.

Dhawq is a matter of individual preference.

I mentioned the name of shaykh Nuh.
If you sit in his gatherings, I think you cannot help but feel
spiritually elevated. He has a haal.
Just when he says Allah...Its enough to create a thousand earthquakes in the soul.

  17. Who wrote Tafsir Haqqani?

  18. Jazak Allah Abu Nibras bhai. The tafsir by Hazrat Siddiqui 'Hasrat' sahib alayhirahmat is excellent. I love his explanation of 93: 7 (which fits in very well with Ala Hadrat's :ra: own translation).

    subhan Allah!

tazkiyyah, I agree Shaykh Nuh is a good model for Ahlus Sunnah but there is *nothing* wrong with na'aras or jazbah if it is out of 'ishq. The states which one can experience in a 'Barelwi' (Ahlus Sunnah) gathering you cannot experience with these English speaking ulama. I am talking of my own experience. Everyone has their own preference. I've listened to tapes of certain skaalars like Riyadh al Haq, Ahmed Ali, etc., and they put me to sleep. Because it is dry as dust . Yet you listen to, eg. Shaykh Sayyid Habib Ali Jifri, or Sayyid Hashmi MiyaN or Sayyid Shaykh ul Islam Madani MiyaN, or Pir Sayyid Abd al Qadir Shah Sahib or Sayyid Irfan Shah Sahib (etc.) and not only will your knowledge increase but you'll feel spiritual too. Why?

If you are a beginner and want to read a tafsir which is short yet very pithy, you should read bahr-ul-`uloom Hazrat Muhammad Abdul Qadeer Siddiqi alaihir rahmah's Tafseer-e-Siddiqi

The emphasis on language and construction of the verse is really good for you if you are learning arabic.

Some of it is available online at www.hasrat.com
