1. The term "children of God", whether used figuratively or literally, is still Kufr and this is agreed upon by Ahl-e-Sunnah wal Jama`ah. Some ignoramuses attempt to use the hadith "al-khalq `iyal Allah". Firstly, that hadith is munkar as per Hazrat`e Imam Bukhari (radhi Allahu `anhu) and secondly, the term `iyal in this context means fuqara (dependants) as per Al-Munawi, and thus, the attempt to justify such a blatantly obvious blunder with ta`wil which are invalid doesn't suffice.

2) Please, brother NJ, before trying to defend anything, go look in Imam Ibn Hajar's Fath al-Bari upon this issue. Imam Ibn Hajar (and I believe Sayyidi Abu Hasan madda zillahul aali has translated it for us, may Allah reward him), quotes a riwayah from Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal's musnad and from another book by Ibn Ishaq that Sayyida Ai`sha narrates that the Prophet sal Allahu `alayhi wa salim said that "they can not hear better than you".

Note that after this, Imam Ibn Hajar quotes Al-Isma`ili who states that this means that Sayyida Ai`sha recanted from that position. Noting that Sayyida Ai`sha was the only one who incorrectly differed and thus, when she recanted, the saHaba then agreed upon the belief that the DEAD COULD HEAR.

 

Brother, I think you're on thin ice here as all of these statements you've quoted can be interpreted figuratively except the first; and it is possible the Sahaba or the Salaf did differ.

We should leave refutation to qualified ulama or, at most, transmit their opinions.

So far I haven't heard a reputable Sunni scholar say Hamza Yusuf is of batil aqidah.
Rather he has helped Sunniyat in the West more than anyone else as far as the under 30s are concerned.
